Abingdon is a Virginia Historic Landmark and its 20-square block Historic District includes the Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum. Cultural activities can be enjoyed at the William King Regional Arts Center and the Barter Theatre. This small town is surrounded by fertile farmland. Washington County leads the state of Virginia in production and marketing of Burley Tobacco. The county ranks sixth in the state for number of dairy cattle and sixth for the total number of cattle. Fishing amid mountain beauty can be experienced in the area around Abingdon. Whitetop Laurel, Taylor's Valley, Green Cove, Big Tumbling Creek, Hidden Valley, and the forks of the Holston are just a few of the streams popular with anglers. At an altitude of 2,200 feet, Abingdon's summer high temperatures are not as extreme as other regions of Virginia.
