This small town contains an impressive 40-block National Historic District and 350 buildings dating to the 1700-1800's period. Founded in 1908, the nearby University of Mary Washington (formerly Mary Washington College) is a coeducational, selective, state-funded, four-year liberal arts college. This institution is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges located in Fredericksburg. The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, Kenmore Plantation and James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library are attractions available in the Fredericksburg area. Amtrak, the national railroad passenger service, has a station in Fredericksburg. The area's Civil War battles are commemorated in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park. Four major battles were fought around Fredericksburg, and more than 7,000 acres are preserved by the National Park Service.
