With alumni that include Stonewall Jackson and George S. Patton, the Virginia Military Institute is steeped in history and tradition. So is this lovely town tucked in the Shenandoah Mountains. Lexington's primary economic activity stems from higher education and tourism. It is the county seat of Rockbridge County. Lexington is the home of beautiful Washington and Lee University. The Robert E. Lee gravesite is in the Lee Chapel on campus. Guided tours are given daily of the Stonewall Jackson House at 8 East Washington Street. The huge Virginia Horse Center is located in Lexington. It hosts over 100 events a year including horse shows, clinics, workshops and community events. The name first chosen by the Virginia Legislature for the county seat of Rockbridge County was in honor of the first great battle of the Revolutionary War, the battle of Lexington. |
