Orange is the county seat of Orange County. The county is best known for its beautiful rolling countryside and award-winning wineries. Famous homes are nearby - including James Madison's Montpelier, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland. The Orange Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic district includes one of the most impressive train depots we have seen in a small town. Orange County is one of the most historic counties in the state. The county was notably the life-long home of James Madison, Father of the United States Constitution, and fourth President of the United States. The Montpelier Wine Festival is held in May, the Orange County Fair is in July, the Somerset Steam & Gas Show occurs in August, the Orange Street Festival is held for one day in September, and the Pick of the Piedmont Wine Festival is celebrated in October. Orange County was named for Prince William III of Orange, a famous Protestant King of Great Britain and Ireland, by Ulster-Scots settlers in the 18th century. |
