South Boston's commercial district is characterized by compact, mostly two-story brick buildings usually possessing modernized storefronts but preserved upper-story facades highlighted with corbeled brick cornices, round-arched windows, and other decorative features. Most of the commercial buildings on South Main Street date from the 1880s and 1890s. In 2002 a former local tobacco warehouse was transformed into The Prizery, a regional visual and performing arts center. Motorsports Alley is located in South Boston, offering all venues of track racing. These multi-use facilities include the Martinsville Speedway (NASCAR Sprint Cup and Craftsman Truck), South Boston Speedway (NASCAR Late Model Stock) and Virginia International Raceway (Sports car and motorcycle road racing). This small town is named in honor of Boston, Massachusetts. |
