Due to its similar name, travelers sometime confuse this city with the state's capital, Charleston. Charles Washington, the founder of Charles Town, was the youngest full brother of George Washington. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is located just northeast from the center of town and offers thoroughbred racing and gaming activities.  Charles Town’s Old Opera House Theatre Company on N. George St. conducts performances in the historic 1910 opera house. The Charles Town Heritage Festival is held annually in September. Tours are available of the 1780 home of Charles Washington, known as Happy Retreat. This small town can be found at the intersection of Routes 9 and 340 in the far northeast corner of West Virginia. Charles Town is the county seat of Jefferson County.
