Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
|
|
This lovely, historically significant small town is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet. Harpers Ferry is best known for John Brown's raid on the Armory in 1859 and its role in the American Civil War. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) headquarters is located in Harpers Ferry and the town is one of only a few through which the Appalachian Trail passes directly. The 2,300-acre Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located on Route 340 just outside town. If you love history, Harpers Ferry will keep you entertained for hours. The name of the town originates from 1750 when English colonist Robert Harper was given a patent on 125 acres (0.5 km²) at the present location of the town. In 1761, Mr. Harper established a ferry service across the Potomac. EARNS OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. |
