Shullsburg, Wisconsin
|
|
This small town is Wisconsin's 3rd oldest city after Green Bay and Prairie du Chien. Shullsburg is located in the center of the Upper Mississippi River Valley Lead Mining District. Lead and zinc mining became active in the Shullsburg area in 1862 and continued until 1978. To enhance your shopping and dining pleasures, Shullsburg offers many 1800’s vintage stone buildings in its commercial center, the Historic Water Street District. Many of these structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including The Copeland Opera House, built in 1882. When in Shullsburg, take a guided tour of the Badger Mine & Museum. The museum contains artifacts illustrating how life was in Wisconsin's early mining communities. After soaking in Shullsburg's history, descend 51 steps with your tour guide into a hand-dug nineteenth century lead mine. Two ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) and snowmobiling trails are available in the area – the 47 mile Cheese County Trail from Monroe to Mineral Point, and the 10 mile Pecatonica State Trail from Calamine to Belmont. This small town lies on Route 11 in southwest Wisconsin, only 5 miles north of the Illinois border. |
