A Place Called Home

Finally I’m sixteen and on my own
First taste of freedom away from home
Sharing a boxcar with passengers from the barnyard
A stow-away among freight, a cast-away by fate

I’m looking for a new place to call my home
Where strangers are welcomed as their own
They won’t care where you are from
They’re just grateful that you’ve come

I’m looking for a home in the State of Acceptance
With big signs that read OPEN FOR ADMITTANCE
Just pull up a chair and set a spell
Share with us a song or a joke to tell

I’m looking for a new place to call my home
Where strangers are welcomed as their own
With family reunions and summertime picnics
Familiar places filled with friendly faces

After two years of living on my own
I’m going back to my old home
That big front lawn I used to mow, vegetable patch I helped to grow
Pale wood siding I painted over the years, squeaky porch swing still sweet to my ears

Now all the memories come flooding back
At the front door I stare at the plaque
Welcome to The Sanctuary orphan’s home
This house the only roots I’ve ever known

I’m looking for a new place to call my home
Where strangers are welcomed as their own
They won’t care where you are from
They’re just grateful that you’ve come
