Growing Along the Way
I pick crimson clover aside a field of hay
The smiles from a sunflower to brighten up your day
A water lily from the meadow as I pass through
That daffodil atop a hill so you can share the view
Though my duties often take me away
I think of your simple joys along the way
Over the years I didn’t write as often as I should
So they express to you the thoughts I never could
The wildflowers along the country roads
They seem to extend forever
Remind me of our younger years
Oh what wild times we had together
I’m coming back home again
And bringing you more flowers
I hope you enjoy the new colors
Blossomed by recent showers
Over the years I didn’t write as often as I should
So they express to you the thoughts I never could
As I turn down the lane and sense you near
The grasses have grown since I was last here
This wandering wreath for my dearest friend
A kiss on your headstone before departing again
For how many years have I brought you flowers
For how many more till my final hours
